In case of custom tag included in a custom tag, it is processed multiple times.

For example, if you have this structure in richtext field:

-custom tag

--custom tag

---custom tag

----custom tag

executions will look like this:

-custom tag - once

--custom tag - twice

---custom tag - 3 times

----custom tag - 4 times

Can be caught by observing "EzSystems\EzPlatformRichText\eZ\RichText\Converter\Render::getCustomTemplateContent" function executions.
